Sweden to map immigrants' values to boost integration
SWEDEN, JUL 5 – Sweden will survey 3,000 people to understand immigrant values and support integration in a secular, liberal society with 20% foreign-born residents, officials said.
- On July 6, Sweden's new Integration Minister Simona Mohamsson announced a plan to survey 3,000 people nationwide about their values to improve immigrant integration.
- Since coming to power in 2022 with support from the far-right Sweden Democrats, the right-wing government is seeking to tackle integration issues amid an increasing number of immigrants from traditional societies with differing social values.
- The survey will split respondents evenly between Swedish-born and non-Western backgrounds to guide integration policies, as prior studies show immigrant values tend to align with natives' after ten years.
- Mohamsson emphasized the plan does not seek to change opinions but to uphold Swedish liberal values, stating immigrants must actively participate in society and highlighted issues around personal freedom and social norms.
- This initiative reflects ongoing national efforts to break ethnic and linguistic segregation and reinforce social cohesion amid Sweden's 20% foreign-born population in 2024 and debates over integration and housing policies.
