Dame Penelope Keith, star of The Good Life, dies aged 86
The actress became a household name as Margo Leadbetter in The Good Life and later received a DBE for services to the arts and charity.
Dame Penelope Keith, known for her roles in The Good Life and Manor Born, has died at her home in Surrey after living there for more than 50 years.
Born in Sutton, Keith joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1963 and became a household name playing Margo Leadbetter in The Good Life, winning the 1976 Olivier Award for Best Comedy Performance.
In her later career, Keith presented documentary series for the BBC and was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2014 New Year Honours for services to the arts.
Jeremy Hunt paid tribute on social media, describing her as a "neighbour & friend" in Milford and stating she "helped Britain laugh at itself" and brought happiness to audiences.
Her legacy rests on brilliant timing and distinctive talent developed early through matinées in the West End, establishing her as a defining figure in comedy entertainment.
