The Game Sues Virgin/UMG Over His 'Drillmatic' Album
100 Entertainment says UMG spent $179,000 of a promised $500,000 marketing budget and skipped radio promotion for Drillmatic.
On Wednesday, September 30, 100 Entertainment Inc. filed a lawsuit in California Superior Court against Universal Music Group and Virgin, alleging breach of contract regarding marketing support for The Game's 2022 album Drillmatic and seeking at least $500,000 in damages.
According to the complaint, UMG and Virgin promised a $500,000 marketing budget for the album but spent only $179,000. Entertainment alleges the defendants failed to fund radio promotion, which had a dedicated $125,000 allocation, leaving more than $320,000 unused.
Because of the alleged lack of investment, The Game claims he personally funded a 'substantial portion' of the music video production costs for the single 'Stupid' featuring Big Sean. He asserts UMG has not reimbursed these expenses, impacting his royalties and streaming revenue.
Drillmatic debuted at No. 12 on the Billboard 200, selling the equivalent of about 25,000 records in its first week. While the label denied any breach of contract previously, a UMG representative did not immediately return a request for comment on Thursday.
Lawyer Michael Trauben wrote in the complaint that the album did not perform as expected due to the reduced promotional support. The plaintiff seeks damages for lost royalties and sales revenues, with the case proceeding in California Superior Court to determine financial losses.
