EU Queries Czech PM's Moves to Tackle Conflicts of Interest
The Commission wants more detail on a trust plan for Andrej Babis’ shares and says subsidies may need to stay off the EU bill for now.
- On May 20, the European Commission sent a letter to the Czech government requesting information on arrangements designed to prevent conflicts of interest over EU subsidies linked to Prime Minister Andrej Babiš's business empire.
- Previous rulings by Czech courts and EU institutions found Babiš in conflict of interest during his 2017-2021 tenure, prompting him to announce in December he would move Agrofert into an independently governed trust.
- Babiš claimed he had "resolved the alleged conflict of interest far beyond the scope of Czech and European laws" and would not benefit from Agrofert, while some Czech authorities ruled the trust structure complies with regulations.
- The Commission warned Czech authorities not to seek EU budget reimbursement for subsidy payments to the businesses concerned until resolution, a move that would shift costs to the Czech state budget if implemented.
- Commission deputy director-general Hugo Sobral wrote that "some matters still need to be clarified" after the Czech response fell short, as government agencies remained unresponsive to further questions.
