The euro defended its role as the world's second most important currency in 2024. The international role had remained stable, the European Central Bank (ECB) announced in Frankfurt on Wednesday. The share of the euro in the world's official foreign exchange reserves was adjusted for exchange rate changes little changed at 20 percent. A reserve currency is a globally important currency, which is also held by other central banks.
