Brussels wants to tax emissions of all flights, without exception, from an airport in the European Economic Area and landing in third countries, up to 5000 kilometres away.
On Friday the European Commission presented an action plan for electrification which aims to double the weight of electricity on fossil fuels in the energy consumption of EU countries. The new roadmap proposes measures such as reducing the tax burden of non-fossil energy on gas and advocates extending the service life of European nuclear power plants, which gives a halo of hope to the continuity of reactors such as Almaraz in Extremadura .
This week, diplomatically, "no small beer" was on the menu in Brussels, in the words of a senior official at the European Commission. There was haggling over climate plans until the early hours. While emission plans are politically sensitive, Europe seems to be in complete agreement on greater autonomy through electrification.
