The European Parliament has decided to allow tech companies to search private news again for evidence of sexual child abuse. Excluding encrypted chats such as Signal or WhatsApp.
Despite criticism of the "chat control" of data protectors, the possibility to scan private chats on child pornographic material could come back. What should Whatsapp and Co. then?
Next chapter on "Chat control": Messenger services should in principle be allowed to search private chats again in certain cases in the European Union for representations of sexualised violence against children. This resulted in a vote in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
A transitional arrangement should allow WhatsApp, Signal and others to search for known abuse material again by 2028.
