North Korea test-fires tactical ballistic missile, KCNA says

KCNA said the test confirmed a technical upgrade as South Korea reported multiple missiles and one flew more than 900 km, officials said.

  • On Monday, North Korea test-fired a tactical ballistic missile, with state media KCNA reporting on Tuesday that the test confirmed technical upgrades. South Korea's military detected the missile flying more than 900 km from the Pyongyang area.
  • The missile test follows last Thursday's hypersonic launch overseen by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung. JCS spokesperson Jang Do-young stated the latest North Korean action appears to be a show of force.
  • Following the launch, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited a defense industry museum on Sunday. Kim stated the country's weaponry "will be developed and completed in a more strenuous manner," KCNA reported.
  • Citing United Nations Security Council resolutions, South Korea's presidential office urged an immediate stop to these launches. Tensions remain elevated following a landmine blast last week that wounded three soldiers in the Demilitarized Zone.
  • US President Donald Trump stated on Monday that he may meet with Kim during an upcoming visit to Asia. Pyongyang continues demanding that Washington abandon its "hostile" policy and drop denuclearization demands as a condition for talks.
