The do's and don'ts of defrosting car windscreens - Experts reveal huge mistakes

RACT warns against hot water and metal scrapers to prevent cracked windscreens and legal penalties for unsafe driving practices in Tasmania.

  • Earlier this month the Royal Automobile Club of Tasmania issued do's and don'ts for defrosting windscreens, warning motorists that hot or boiling water can cause the glass to crack.
  • On frosty mornings many drivers feel rushed and frustrated, with a common instinct to use hot water or put the kettle on, Spence tweeted on November 1, 2025.
  • Practically, RACT recommends drivers use a plastic scraper or cloth to speed defrosting while turning on vehicle heating, front and rear windscreen heaters, and air conditioning to prevent fog.
  • Legal and safety risks include driving without a clear view being illegal and leaving a car unattended while running violating Tassie law, RACT advised.
  • Avoid DIY tools like metal scrapers because they may scratch the windscreen, and resist using credit cards to scrape as they can be damaged, RACT advised.
