- A Nepal Environment Society study released on Sunday concluded an ice-rock collapse, not a GLOF, triggered the August 26 disaster in the Langtang Lirung area of Rasuwa.
- Bishal Nath Upreti, president of the Nepal Centre for Disaster Management, said initial theories of a GLOF or earthquake were discarded after the US Geological Survey clarified that falling ice and rock generated the earthquake.
- According to the study, the ice-rock mass fell from about 5,200 metres at an estimated average speed of 167 kmph, while satellite images revealed major geographical changes across about 10 square kilometres.
- The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported Monday the death toll crossed 900, with over 4,000 people missing, while 13 hydropower projects lost around 431 MW of generation capacity.
- Scientists are still trying to establish the precise mechanism, as no one has reached the site; one emerging hypothesis suggests a massive rockslide with ice riding over the falling rock, though researchers caution the theory cannot yet be confirmed.
