Fetterman Joins Trump’s Embrace of Data Centers
More than 500 U.S. jurisdictions have imposed severe limits or bans, even as 66 GW of data center capacity is under construction, JLL said.
- On Monday, President Donald Trump expressed support for data center development, with Senator John Fetterman, a Pennsylvania Democrat, agreeing that America must win the war for AI supremacy over China.
- While more than 500 jurisdictions have enacted severe constraints or bans on server farms this year, the economic forces driving the massive data center buildout remain extremely strong.
- According to an August survey from Heatmap Pro and Embold Research, 75 percent of Americans oppose building a data center in their area, yet 95 percent of the 66 GW of capacity under construction is already reserved.
- Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro signed an executive order establishing the "strictest guardrails in the nation," while Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul have announced restrictions on new approvals.
- Senator Dave McCormick, R-Pa., argued that China is attempting to "manipulate America's debate over AI and energy," contending that blocking these facilities could sabotage American dominance in the AI race.
