The cruise ship at center of a deadly hantavirus outbreak has to undergo extra cleaning

Oceanwide Expeditions said 12 hantavirus cases and three deaths have been reported, and passengers and crew remain in quarantine.

  • Following detection of a 12th confirmed hantavirus case, the World Health Organization urged countries to closely monitor passengers linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship during a Geneva briefing on Tuesday.
  • Authorities suspect the initial spread may be linked to rodent exposure during an Arctic cruise that departed Keflavik, Iceland on May 29, though the Andes virus strain can transmit between people in rare cases and the exact source remains under investigation.
  • Twelve confirmed cases and three deaths have been reported to WHO with no new fatalities since May 2, while around 600 individuals across 30 countries remain under monitoring given the six-week incubation period.
  • Rotterdam's public health director Yvonne van Duijnhoven confirmed the Hondius underwent enhanced cleaning after arriving eight days ago, with the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment assessing transmission risk within the Netherlands as very low.
  • Oceanwide Expeditions said all voyages will resume June 13 onwards as scheduled with no further disruption expected, while the ship remains based in Vlissingen in southern Netherlands and passengers and crew stay quarantined under close monitoring.
