The body of the former soldier, nicknamed "the Balkan Boucher" and condemned in particular for the genocide of Srebrenica in 1995, was welcomed Thursday in Serbia with military honours.
The backlash came after memorial services for the former Bosnian Serb military leader who died in The Hague prison.
The body of the Bosnian Serb military commander was received with military honors in Belgrade.
"I strongly condemn the public glorification of Ratko Mladić, the late war criminal convicted of genocide in Srebrenica and crimes against humanity, including statements by officials from Republika Srpska, an entity in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as from Serbia," said Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Michael O'Flaherty.

The public glorification of Ratko Mladic, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for war crimes and genocide and who recently passed away, as well as statements by officials of the Republika Srpska and Serbia paying tribute to Mladic, was condemned and described as unlawful by the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Michael O'Flaherty in a statement on Friday.
