‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ Review: Salvation With Style And Scares
The Warrens return from retirement for a final exorcism based on the Smurls family's Pennsylvania case, shifting focus to their personal ordeal in the franchise's concluding film.
- Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return as Ed and Lorraine Warren to investigate one final exorcism based on the Smurl family's account in West Pittston, Pennsylvania.
- The filmmakers center the story on Ed and Lorraine Warren because the couple are semi-retired in 1986 with Ed recovering from a heart attack, and this nine-film Conjuring franchise installment makes the Warrens case subjects, heightening the threat's personal stakes.
- Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga again anchor the film with strong performances, while filming in London and Hertfordshire, cinematographer Eli Born and production designer John Frankish convincingly evoke Pennsylvania in the 2 hours and 15 minutes runtime.
- Critics generally call it a fitting finale, praising the emotional core even as some scares are telegraphed, and note this likely ends The Warrens' central role despite The Conjuring cinematic universe continuing.
- Narratively and visually, Last Rites positions the franchise to continue beyond the Warrens, as Warner Bros. leaves the 'coffin door' ajar for future spin-offs in the Conjuring cinematic universe.

'The Conjuring: Last Rites' Is A Disappointing Finale
Warner Bros.It feels fitting that The Conjuring became the biggest horror franchise of the superhero era. The Conjuring: Last Rites has its moments, but it's mostly a mild finale
The Conjuring movies may be the most wholesome franchise in modern horror. Sure, they’re all rated R, an impressive feat for films that contain relatively little direct violence, sex, or even cursing — they’re age-restricted based on pure overall terror.
Despite not always enthusiastic reviews, it is the highest-grossing horror series of all time. The Conjuring, translated into Czech as The Conjuring, concludes with the fourth chapter. The last film directed by Michael Chavez, in which the audience meets demonologists played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, has found its imaginary end. In terms of craftsmanship, everything looks as it should. In terms of content, it is weaker.
