Toronto Blue Jays Activate Veteran Reliever Sewald, Option Estrada to Triple-A
Toronto adds a veteran reliever as the Blue Jays sit 2.5 games from a playoff spot, reports Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.
On Wednesday, the Toronto Blue Jays claimed relief pitcher Paul Sewald off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks, two days after his designation for assignment.
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo called the decision 'agonizing' and 'brutal,' ending the veteran's second tenure with Arizona after he struggled to maintain his closer role.
Sewald recorded 24 saves this season but struggled with a 6.23 ERA and allowed a career-high 12 homers; he successfully converted nearly 89% of his save opportunities.
To accommodate Sewald on the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays recalled right-hander Jake Bloss and placed him on the 60-day injured list.
With Toronto 2.5 games behind a playoff spot, the veteran joins a staff that already utilizes Louis Varland for ninth-inning situations, suggesting a setup role.
