Sberbank Wins Russia’s Approval for Crypto Exchange Services
The bank joins nine registered operators as Russia’s regulated crypto framework expands ahead of a Dec. 1 product launch.
- The Bank of Russia added Sberbank to its register of authorized digital currency exchange operators on Saturday, enabling the lender to offer cryptocurrency trading services alongside nine other registered firms.
- Russia's regulated crypto trading framework, which took effect Sept. 1, permits banks to act as intermediaries for trading, custody, and cross-border settlements under central bank supervision. Sberbank has been developing infrastructure and testing Bitcoin, Ether, and Tether to support its planned product launch.
- Sberbank joins nine organizations on the exchange register, with five firms now listed as digital depositories including VTB and Atomyze. First deputy chairman Alexander Vedyakhin said the bank intends to launch its digital depository services by Dec. 1, 2026.
- This approval marks a significant shift from the central bank's 2022 proposal to ban domestic crypto exchanges. Although the framework permits cross-border settlements, it retains the prohibition on cryptocurrency payments for domestic commerce, requiring transactions to go through registered intermediaries.
- While expanding domestic operations, Sberbank remains subject to full blocking sanctions under Executive Order 14024. Treasury guidance prohibits United States persons from facilitating cryptocurrency transactions involving blocked property, establishing strict compliance boundaries.
