The building industry applauds Ontario and federal governments for launching the DCs reduction program
The three-year program will let municipalities apply for infrastructure funding as officials aim to cut fees that have pushed up new-home costs.
- The $8.8 billion Development Charge Reduction Program opened applications on Tuesday, aiming to reduce DCs by 30 to 50 per cent in Ontario's fastest-growing municipalities over three years.
- Over the last 15-20 years, DCs have hit record highs, with some regions experiencing as much as a 1,000 per cent increase in fees that are passed down to homebuyers.
- Ontario Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Rob Flack said the program will make a "life-changing difference" for families, as the residential construction industry contributes more than $66.6 billion to the provincial economy.
- Municipalities can apply for funding through June 19 for shovel-ready infrastructure projects, with selection prioritized by committed rate reduction percentage and projected home construction numbers.
- Since 2007, the Ontario Home Builders and the Building Industry and Land Development Association members have built more than 700,000 homes across more than 500 Ontario communities.
