In the fight against child pornography, messenger services are allowed to voluntarily search chats because of an exception - so far. Following a vote by the EU Parliament, the rule expires at the beginning of April.
Providers such as Google, Meta or Snapchat are allowed to scan private messages on child pornographic content so far. This exception rule is now running out. The EU Commission is appalled.
On the net, pornographic representations accumulate. The perpetrators always aim at children. Until now, platforms were allowed to control private chats voluntarily on suspicion. The EU Parliament is now ending this regulation. Experts and platforms see this as a dangerous step.
For years, the EU has been discussing a law to detect cases of child abuse more quickly on WhatsApp, Instagram and others. Now, the out of voluntary chat controls by the Messenger services seems to seal.
