Kordofan became one of the main fronts in the war in Sudan. The region connects the army-controlled central and eastern parts of the country with Darfur, which is under the control of the paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF). Fighting in the area has intensified since the end of 2025. The region includes North, South and West Kordofan and lies between the zones of influence of the two countries.
