Basel started the Fasnacht on early Monday morning. Traditionally, the "Morgestraich" was the kick-off, in which several thousand participants travelled through the city centre.

On Monday, February 23, 2026, at 4:00 p.m., the morningstraich begins in Basel – and thus the famous Basler Fasnacht. With the command "Morgestraich – vorwärf, march!" all lights go out in the city centre. Only the artfully painted lanterns of the cliques shine through the dark alleys. The Basel carnival started on Monday in the early morning with the traditional "Morgenstreich". At 04:00, the lights went out and the clicks went on in the streets of the Rhine with their satirical lanterns, to the sound of the piccolos and drums.
