On 5 July 1975, Cape Verde gained independence after a Portuguese colonial period of more than five centuries. The African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), a binational party based in "Portuguese" Guinea and in the Cape Verdean archipelago, had been waging a liberation struggle there since 1963. Since gaining freedom from Portugal on July 5, 1975, Cape Verde is regarded as one of West Africa's most stable nations. Overcoming low-literacy and inadequate healthcare are just some its achievements.
On July 5, 1975, 50 years ago, the independence of Cape Verde was granted. But the dream of Amílcar Cabral, to keep Cape Verde and Guinea united through the PAIGC, quickly disappeared.
