The driver who slammed into an LA bus before a news helicopter crash is charged with murder
Authorities say the SUV driver is expected in court Friday as investigators examine the bus crash and the helicopter that killed three more.
- On Thursday, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced second-degree murder charges against 36-year-old Bailee Lynn Rios following Tuesday's fatal Metro bus collision in Chatsworth.
- Investigators allege Rios drove a 2004 Ford Expedition southbound in northbound lanes while under the influence of narcotics, running a red light and broadsiding a Metro Line 166 bus near Nordhoff Street.
- The impact killed 46-year-old Daniel Castillo and 31-year-old Gage Weida; Weida's family remembered him as having a "heart of gold."
- Hours later, an NBC4 news helicopter covering the scene crashed nearby, killing pilot George Marciniw, reporter Eliana Moreno, and Edy Gutierrez Mejia.
- Community members will honor all five victims at a vigil Thursday evening at St. John Eudes Church in Chatsworth, while Rios faces arraignment Friday.
