Thailand Denies Viral Claim Macron Knelt Before King
AFP and Thai officials said the viral picture was AI-generated, with more than 40,000 likes and 2,000 shares before it was debunked.
On Thursday, Thailand's Foreign Ministry denied that French President Emmanuel Macron knelt before King Maha Vajiralongkorn during this week's state visit to Paris, confirming the viral image is AI-generated.
The misleading image circulated following the King's official visit to France, marking 170 years of diplomatic relations, shortly after Macron presented the King with the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour.
One Thai-language social media post garnered more than 40,000 likes and 2,000 shares by the following day, while a page with more than 2 million followers also shared the post.
Fact-Checkers, including Euronews' The Cube, determined the image was 'generated with OpenAI tools,' and official photographs from Thailand's Foreign Ministry show Macron standing during the ceremony.
This incident marks the latest instance of AI-generated imagery involving Thailand's royal family; in June, images claiming to show Thai Princess Sirivannavari crying were also debunked as AI-generated.
