Thailand Mandates 21-Day Ebola Quarantine for DRC, Uganda Arrivals
Thailand said travelers from Congo or Uganda must quarantine for 21 days as the World Health Organization recorded 10 Ebola deaths in the outbreak.
On Tuesday, Thailand imposed a 21-day quarantine order for travelers from or transiting through the Democratic Republic of Congo or Uganda, where a deadly Ebola crisis is surging. Senior public health official Somlerk Jeungsmarn cited risks from global population movement despite no reported cases in Thailand.
An Ebola outbreak in eastern DR Congo has sparked an international health alert from the World Health Organization, with the WHO recording 10 confirmed deaths and 220 suspected deaths since mid-May. Uganda has confirmed seven cases of the Bundibugyo strain.
Uganda registered 7,183 Congolese refugees from January to May 24 as daily arrivals surged to 253, overwhelming Nyakabande transit centre to more than double its 850-person capacity with 1,775 residents. Ebola spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids and causes severe bleeding and organ failure.
Authorities plan to relocate about 1,200 refugees from Nyakabande to Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Isingiro District, with officials implementing enhanced screening, mandatory handwashing and isolation facilities. The facility struggles with limited manpower and inadequate personal protective equipment after development partners reduced staffing due to funding constraints.
Border official Ismail Ndyayambaje, LCIII chairperson for Bunagana Town Council, urged communities to observe Ebola prevention measures as refugee Zawadi Simbenzye described militia violence by Wazalendo, FDLR and Mai-Mai groups exploiting security gaps in East Democratic Republic of Congo. Health officials emphasize that screening, rapid isolation and cross-border coordination remain critical to containment.
Thailand has imposed a mandatory 21-day quarantine on travelers from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda following the outbreak of the Ebola virus. The outbreak in the east was reported in mid-May in the Congolese capital, Kinshasa, and cases have also been reported in neighboring Uganda.
