Thai police go undercover as lion dancers to catch thief
- On Feb 19, Thai police said they used a red-and-yellow lion dance costume to arrest a suspect accused of stealing about $81,000 in Buddhist artefacts on Feb 18.
- After weeks of surveillance, police dressed as a lion made the arrest on Wednesday evening following a report from a police superintendent earlier this month that his home had been broken into, and investigators traced items to a seller in Nonthaburi.
- Police records show the theft included numerous Buddhist objects and two 12-inch Buddha statues, with evidence of repeated attempts to enter the suburban Bangkok home.
- A video released by Thai police shows officers acting as lion dancers gradually moving closer to the suspect before an officer emerged from the lion head and, with colleagues who assisted in the arrest, pinned him to the ground.
- The suspect, a 33-year-old man with prior drug and theft convictions, was previously seen fleeing a temple where officers spotted him, police said.
