Texas Using Special Bait to Attract Screwworms to Insecticide

EL PASO COUNTY, TEXAS, JUL 21 – Swormlure-5 bait targets screwworm flies to protect livestock and wildlife, with prior use cutting fly populations by 90%, officials said.

  • The TDA announced that, this week, it is deploying Swormlure-5 bait in collaboration with USDA and Secretary Brooke Rollins in South Texas and the U.S.-Mexico border region.
  • This past week, the outbreak has shut down cattle imports from Mexico into the U.S., and larvae inflict severe tissue damage, similar to the 1970s eradication effort.
  • Swormlure-5 mimics the scent of open wounds, the TDA spokesperson said, adding it may be highly effective when combined with insecticides such as Dichlorvos.
  • This measure aims to prevent a screwworm outbreak that could devastate ranching operations and local wildlife, Sid Miller said that the formula is 'more powerful and effective than ever'.
  • According to the USDA, aerial drops are expected around July of next year, and TDA will coordinate specialized trap deployment with Mexico and partners.
