Texas Students Saw Slight Gains in Math, Stalled Progress in Reading, STAAR Results Show
Texas officials said 49% of third graders met reading grade level as math improved in most grades and social studies rose for eighth graders.
On Tuesday, the Texas Education Agency released 2026 STAAR results for grades 3 through 8, showing statewide improvements in math and social studies while reading performance remained relatively flat.
TEA Commissioner Mike Morath credited the statewide cell phone ban for middle school reading gains, though test changes in 2022 and 2023 complicate year-to-year comparisons, he noted.
Third-Grade reading scores fell to 49%, a 1 percentage-point decline from last year, while math scores remained flat at 44% for third grade and rose 2% in fifth and eighth grades.
Fort Worth ISD posted significant gains with reading scores rising about 3% and math about 6%, while Arlington ISD Superintendent Matt Smith announced heavy investments in professional learning for math.
Texas is phasing out the STAAR for three shorter tests beginning in the 2027-28 academic year, with agency officials planning to release delayed science assessment results on July 31.
