Texas screwworm cases addressed by the Montana Department of Livestock
Out-of-state animals must be inspected and wound-free, and approved treatment must be given 72 hours to 14 days before entry, officials said.
The Montana Department of Livestock has issued an emergency order to protect livestock from the New World Screwworm , which is effective immediately and may last up to five years.
Livestock entering Montana from infested states must pass inspection and be free of wounds and signs of NWS to be allowed entry.
If any animal in a shipment shows signs of NWS infestation, none may enter until all are treated and their wounds healed, with treatment administered 72 hours to 14 days before entry.
NWS larvae infest wounds and can severely damage tissue in animals and occasionally humans.
