Texas mom shares daughter's hantavirus story as new outbreak draws attention
Julie Barron-Wells says her daughter died after a 10-day diagnosis delay, hoping the case raises awareness about hantavirus.
A Texas mother, Julie Barron-Wells, is sharing her daughter Kylie Lane's 2018 death from hantavirus as a new cruise ship outbreak prompts renewed medical attention.
Lane visited the emergency room multiple times with severe abdominal pain, fever, and difficulty breathing before doctors diagnosed the rare virus 10 days later.
After 72 days in the hospital, Lane, who was a healthy 28-year-old mom and newlywed, died from the infection, Barron-Wells told KTVT.
Hoping to raise awareness, Barron-Wells told KTVT she wants her daughter's story to encourage more research into hantavirus and prevent future tragedies.
The family remains unsure exactly how Lane contracted the virus, with Barron-Wells noting there is really nothing to do but hold a hand and pray.
