Texas man charged with capital murder after 2-year-old dies in locked car while he slept

Family members found the child in a non-running car after checking on Rodriguez, and police said the heat created deadly conditions inside the vehicle.

  • On Sunday, Midland Police Department officers arrested Lorenzo Rodriguez, 25, and charged him with capital murder after his 2-year-old daughter died inside a locked vehicle on the 100 block of East Pecan Avenue.
  • Concerned family members went to the home Sunday evening to check on Rodriguez after learning he had consumed alcohol the night before, eventually finding the child in a non-running Kia parked outside.
  • The high temperature in Midland on Sunday was 99 degrees; according to the National Weather Service, temperatures inside a parked vehicle can reach more than 130 degrees Fahrenheit in 30 minutes.
  • Family members broke a window to rescue the toddler and rushed her to Midland Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
  • Following a preliminary investigation into the circumstances of the child's death, investigators arrested Rodriguez and charged him with capital murder. He had been asleep since approximately 11 a.m. before relatives arrived.
