Texas DPS Trooper Dies Following on-Duty Crash

The Department of Public Safety said the 27-year-old died when a truck-tractor semi-trailer pulled in front of his cruiser during a traffic stop.

  • On Wednesday, Texas Highway Patrol Trooper Sergio Romero, 27, died in a line-of-duty crash near Childress while attempting a traffic stop along US-287 at approximately 4 p.m.
  • Romero, who joined the Texas Department of Public Safety with Class B-2025, was killed when a truck-tractor semi-trailer pulled out in front of him, "causing his patrol unit to collide with the vehicle."
  • "Today, we grieve the loss of one of our own," DPS Colonel Freeman F. Martin said, noting Romero served with "courage, integrity and selfless devotion" as the 244th DPS officer to die in line of duty since 1823.
  • Romero is survived by his wife, Francisca, and two young sons, while the crash remains under investigation with officials yet to release details on the semi-truck driver.
  • Childress sits in the southeastern Texas Panhandle, about 115 miles southeast of Amarillo and roughly 250 miles northwest of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, where Romero served the community.
