Texas couple sentenced to 40 years for $30 million pandemic pyramid scheme
Prosecutors said the scheme cheated more than 10,000 people out of over $30 million with false promises of 800% returns.
- On Tuesday, LaShonda and Marlon Moore of Frisco, Texas, received 40-year federal sentences for operating 'Blessings in No Time,' an illegal pyramid scheme that cheated more than 10,000 people out of more than $30 million during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- The scheme operated through so-called 'playing boards' with four participant levels: Fires, Winds, Earths, and Water; participants paid at least $1,400 to the Water position while falsely promised 800% returns and guaranteed refunds.
- Christopher J. Altemus Jr., special agent in charge of the IRS Criminal Investigation Dallas Field Office, said the couple used a polished public image and reality television appearance to build trust while deliberately targeting the African American community.
- U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs for the Eastern District of Texas called the operation a 'get-rich-quick scheme,' stating, 'The Moores' get-rich-quick scheme has earned them a well-deserved stay in federal prison,' and adding that stealing will be prosecuted.
- Special Agent in Charge Christina Foley of the U.S. Secret Service Dallas Field Office said the agency remains steadfast in disrupting such schemes, emphasizing that those who exploit trust during national crises will be held fully accountable.
