Texas A&M Ends Women's and Gender Studies Program
Texas A&M will end Women’s and Gender Studies programs citing low enrollment and new policies limiting race and gender advocacy across its 12-system schools.
- Thursday, Texas A&M University announced it is ending its women’s and gender studies program, confirmed by Cynthia Werner and later by Provost Alan Sams.
- Following the regents' policy change, university leaders cited the System policy restricting advocacy of race or gender ideology and limited student interest as reasons for ending the program.
- During a campuswide review for the spring 2026 semester, faculty and department heads revised hundreds of syllabi, deans forwarded 54 courses to president and provost, and 48 exceptions were granted while six courses were canceled.
- Students enrolled in Women’s and Gender Studies will complete their programs via a teach-out plan of up to six semesters, but no new students will be admitted and over 50 faculty affiliated with the program will keep their jobs.
- On Jan. 29, critics argued `This is absolutely devastating for the faculty and colleagues who have done so much important and groundbreaking research and teaching in this area, and it's really devastating for the state of Texas,` Ira Dworkin said, and `The era of woke activism training camps funded by ordinary taxpayers is over,` said Inez Stepman.
