Australia Cricket Great Warner Pleads Guilty to Drink-Driving
The cricketer’s plea puts his Sydney Thunder captaincy under scrutiny, and sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 18, his lawyer said.
On Wednesday, cricketer David Warner pleaded guilty to mid-range drink-driving at Waverley Local Court in Sydney, with lawyer Bobby Hill entering the admission regarding an incident on Easter Sunday.
Warner was stopped in Sydney on April 5, recording a 0.104 blood alcohol reading—more than double the legal limit—just 11 minutes after his last drink, according to Hill.
Hill described the decision to drive instead of taking an Uber as a "reckless decision," while the 39-year-old Fox Cricket commentator expressed remorse and will request leniency at sentencing.
Warner's guilty plea casts doubt over his future as captain of the Sydney Thunder, with the court scheduling his sentencing for August 18.
This incident follows previous controversies: a 2018 ball-tampering scandal involving Cameron Bancroft and a 2013 altercation with Joe Root. Cricket NSW Chief Executive Lee Germon said the organization takes the allegations "very seriously.
