Stolen Tesla Chase Ends on Crowded San Diego Boardwalk, Striking a Pedestrian
Police say a stolen Tesla under pursuit hit a 25-year-old woman, and one of two suspects is in custody.
- On Monday, a stolen Tesla drove onto the Pacific Beach boardwalk near Thomas Avenue, critically injuring a 25-year-old woman, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
- San Diego Police Department officers initiated a pursuit after identifying the stolen Tesla on Mission Boulevard; the driver, suspected of DUI, struck a San Diego Gas and Electric transformer before fleeing onto the boardwalk.
- Witnesses reported the vehicle traveling at least 50 mph near pedestrians, and SDFD spokesperson Candace Hadley said the busy boardwalk incident was "incredibly frightening."
- Bystanders chased and captured the suspect after he abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot; police took him into custody while paramedics transported the injured woman to a hospital.
- SDPD continues a felony hit-and-run investigation into the incident. While officials blocked off Thomas Avenue and Mission Boulevard near Open Bar for several hours, the boardwalk reopened by 4 p.m.
