Tesla discontinues its Solar Roof tiles, not economically viable
Tesla will supply only conventional solar panels after Solar Roof tiles failed to scale, with about 3,000 systems installed in the U.S., Wood Mackenzie said.
- Tesla discontinued its Solar Roof product after concluding it is not financially viable, with sources close to the program telling Electrek that third-party installers were informed tiles are no longer available for order.
- CEO Elon Musk unveiled the Solar Roof in October 2016 to justify Tesla's roughly $2.6 billion acquisition of SolarCity, though shareholder litigation later revealed the tiles displayed at the Hollywood event were not yet functioning products.
- Musk admitted to "significant mistakes" with the product, as installations lagged behind the 1,000 weekly target; Wood Mackenzie estimated only 3,000 systems were installed over seven years, while customer contracts saw price jumps from about $72,000 to roughly $146,000.
- Tesla's website now redirects the dedicated Solar Roof page to its solar panel section, removing the product from the Energy navigation menu, as the company informed third-party installers it will supply only conventional Solar Panels moving forward.
- Moving away from tiles, the company is prioritizing standard Solar Panels and planning a new $10 billion factory near Houston, Texas, to ramp up production, while Tesla Energy now lists only Solar Panels, Powerwall, and Megapack in its navigation menu.
