Tesco Launches Campaign to Help Families over School Holidays
The supermarket is selling donation bags, funding school fruit schemes and offering free meals and fruit as demand for child food support rises.
Tesco launched a summer food support program featuring pre-filled donation bags priced between £2 and £4, free apples for children at checkouts, and a 'Kids Eat Free' scheme across 317 cafes during the school holidays.
The Trussell Trust reports food bank support for children remains 34% higher than before the pandemic, with more than 900,000 emergency parcels distributed last year amid growing cost-of-living pressures on families.
Customers can purchase pre-filled donation bags at checkout or round up their bills to the nearest pound from August 3 to 9, with funds split between The Felix Project and The Trussell Trust.
"No-One should need to turn to a charity for something as essential as food," said Matthew Duyvenbode, co-chief executive officer at The Trussell Trust, as 41% of charities in The Felix Project network report increased demand.
Tesco aims to help one million school children access free fruit and vegetables by July 2029, expanding on current efforts supporting more than 500 schools during term time.
