Nigeria: Stop Giving Motorcycles As Palliatives, Defence Minister Tells Governors
Musa said some motorcycles given as aid are diverted to terrorists, who use them to move arms and carry out attacks.
- On Thursday, Defence Minister Gen. Christopher Musa warned that terrorists are using motorcycles distributed as palliatives to wreak havoc across the country. Speaking on Channels Television's Politics Today, Musa urged officials to halt these distributions.
- "Those bikes... before you know it, they're already back to the bandits, and that's what they're using," Musa said. The Minister advised distributing only small-capacity motorcycles that offer less mobility for criminal operations.
- Security agencies have identified illegal markets and illicit motor parks as major channels for transporting arms and ammunition. "What we realise from experience is they establish illegal markets... that's where they move arms and ammunition into those areas," Musa added.
- Musa urged authorities to man markets and motor parks to disrupt supply chains. He emphasized that "Crime and development are local," calling for greater local government involvement in identifying criminals.
- "We must allow our local governments to work," Musa stated, arguing that failure of local government aggravates insecurity. He insisted that empowering local chairmen to conduct regular security meetings offers a faster solution than Federal Government management.
