Flames and smoke force passengers to flee New York City area train
JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, AUG 4 – Fire on an eastbound PATH train at Newport Station forced evacuation and disrupted three train lines, with the cause under investigation, officials said.
- At about 6:19 a.m., flames erupted under an eastbound train at Newport PATH Station, prompting evacuation and suspending service, the Port Authority said.
- Amid heavy morning traffic, multiple PATH lines including Journal Square–33rd Street and Hoboken–World Trade Center were suspended, PATH officials said.
- A passenger video shows smoke flooding the PATH train car as bright orange flames engulfed part of the train, prompting a panic evacuation.
- Thirteen passengers were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, nine were transported to the hospital, and all are expected to recover, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
- PATH said the fire's cause is under investigation, and the Hoboken–33rd Street line resumed service around 7:20 a.m.
