The NGT in Uttar Pradesh has declared the tent city set up on the banks of river Ganga in Varanasi as illegal. The NGT has ordered recovery of environmental compensation from the project proponents. The NGT directed that in future, no tent city or similar activity will be allowed on the banks, floodplains or river beds of river Ganga or its tributaries in violation of environmental norms.
