Protesters Arrested at Site of Proposed Main Stadium for 2032 Brisbane Olympics
Five protesters were taken into custody as police and council workers cleared the camp and removed tents before construction began.
On Friday, police dismantled a protest camp at Victoria Park, the site of the proposed $3.6 billion 2032 Brisbane Olympics main stadium, arresting five people during the operation.
Construction of the $3.8 billion Brisbane Stadium begins Monday, following months of occupation by activists and Traditional Owners determined to protect the heritage-listed site from development.
Yagara Elder Gaja Kerry Charlton described the surprise eviction, telling AAP, "They all came up to my little camp," as about 50 police officers and council workers surrounded the site.
Authorities defended the operation as necessary for safety, though Greens MP Michael Berkman accused Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner of a "dodgy, underhanded approach" to the removal.
Ownership transfers to the 2032 Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority on Monday, while Federal Environment Minister Murray Watt holds power to halt the project under pending Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act challenges.
