Tens of thousands in Indiana are still without power a week after deadly storms
NIPSCO says crews have restored power to 282,255 customers, but widespread damage from the derecho still leaves thousands in the dark.
More than 98,000 customers in Northwest Indiana remain without power as of Tuesday afternoon, one week after severe storms struck the region. Northern Indiana Public Service Company continues restoration efforts across the impacted area.
The August 11 derecho knocked out power to more than 60% of NIPSCO customers, causing approximately 370,000 people to lose electricity during severe thunderstorms that swept through the region. Infrastructure damage remains extensive across multiple communities.
Hobart Township Trustee Fred Williams reported the township has exhausted emergency food voucher assistance after serving residents. Many households have purchased generators costing $400 to $700 to cope with prolonged outages.
NIPSCO estimates full restoration for Highland and Munster by 11:59 p.m. on August 25. Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott expressed frustration Wednesday, stating residents entering their eighth day without electricity deserve faster service.
