Tennessee man threatened to kill public officials, kept explosive devices in his home, authorities say
TENNESSEE, AUG 3 – Kevin Wade O'Neal faces 11 attempted murder and 14 prohibited weapons charges after threatening officials and attempting to detonate 14 improvised explosive devices during his arrest, authorities said.
- Authorities in Polk County, Tennessee, arrested 54-year-old Kevin Wade O'Neal on Friday at his Old Fort home after finding 14 improvised explosive devices there.
- Officials served a warrant to arrest O'Neal due to outstanding charges related to threats against government officials and law enforcement officers within the county.
- When O'Neal was taken into custody, officers observed smoke rising from the bedroom area, prompting them to notify the Tennessee ATF and Chattanooga Bomb Squad to respond and secure the location.
- O'Neal is charged with attempted first-degree murder for nine law enforcement officers present during his arrest and two additional individuals in the residence, along with 14 prohibited weapons violations and one charge related to possession of explosive materials; according to Chattanooga police spokesperson Elisa Myzal, none of the devices detonated.
