Pennsylvania ranks 8th for norovirus outbreaks from 2014 to 2023, with long-term care facilities accounting for nearly 12,000 outbreaks nationwide, Trace One analysis shows.
- Using CDC National Outbreak Reporting System data, Trace One identified long-term care facilities had 11,939 norovirus outbreaks over the past decade.
- The winter surge stems from norovirus spreading more readily indoors and on surfaces, with January–March each recording over 3,500 outbreaks and comprising more than half of decade totals.
- Other common exposure sites include schools and universities with 2,388 outbreaks, restaurants 2,210, and child daycares 1,252, while Wisconsin reported 1,739 outbreaks, 8.3% of United States totals .
- Vulnerable groups face higher risk of severe outcomes, as young children, older adults, and individuals with compromised immune systems often require hospitalization due to symptoms like vomiting and dehydration.
- When adjusted for population, Rhode Island ranks first with more than 603 outbreaks per million, while low totals in states like Oregon and Nebraska may reflect underreporting or limited public-health surveillance.
