Environment Canada Confirms Dundurn Tornado as Saskatchewan Reviews 10 Reports
The agency is investigating several more possible twisters after reports of very large hail and wind damage across the province.
On Friday, Environment Canada confirmed a tornado near Dundurn and is investigating 10 record-tying tornado reports across Saskatchewan as a dangerous heat wave fuels extreme weather across the Prairies.
A low-pressure system moving through the province triggered the severe weather outbreak. Meteorologist Kayla Bilous explained that warm, moist air created the atmospheric conditions necessary for the storms.
Significant damage occurred in Speers, 50 kilometres from North Battleford, where residents reported estimated $100k in destruction, while Rosthern and Hague sustained damage to trees and power lines.
Professional tornado hunter Greg Johnson said the count is "pretty spectacular," but such activity is not unprecedented; supercell thunderstorms develop distinct updrafts where tornadoes form.
With humidex values climbing to 45, Environment Canada warned the heat wave will persist and urged residents to stay hydrated, limit strenuous activity, and continue monitoring weather alerts.
