Gram Panchayat Elections to Be Held in Three Phases From December 11

Elections for 12,728 village panchayats and 1.12 lakh wards will occur in three phases after delays caused by reservation disputes and court interventions, the SEC stated.

  • On December 11 the State Election Commissioner Rani Kumudini issued the schedule for three-phase Gram Panchayat polls covering 12,728 village panchayats and 1.12 lakh wards.
  • An ordinance set aside forced use of the old reservation pattern, and earlier plans were stalled after a court stay on October 9 halted the September 29 schedule.
  • Nominations open on November 27, November 30 and December 3, with last filing dates on November 29, December 2 and December 5 for phases with 4,236 Sarpanch and 37,440 ward members in phase one, 4,333 Sarpanch and 38,350 ward members in phase two, and 4,159 Sarpanch and 36,452 ward members in phase three.
  • Over 1.66 crore voters will decide candidates on a non-political basis, but elections are not being held for 25 Gram Panchayats in Mangaapet mandal, two in V. Saidapur mandal, and four in Enkoor and Penuballi mandals due to court orders.
  • The ruling Congress said it will accommodate BC candidates in general seats after two Bills lacking presidential assent drew Opposition parties and a section of BC communities' criticism.
