‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ R-Rated Movie ‘Last Ronin’ Scrapped at Paramount as Studio Develops New Live-Action Version
- Recently, Paramount Pictures is negotiating with Neal H. Moritz to reboot Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a family-friendly live-action franchise with a four-quadrant 'Sonic-fy' tone amid Skydance takeover.
- Skydance's takeover prompted a slate review that shut down Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, animated series mid-production and shelved R-rated TMNT projects like The Last Ronin, planned R-rated TMNT film, and Ilya Naishuller's adaptation.
- Paramount maintains the Mutant Mayhem sequel produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and directed by Jeff Rowe is still set for release, and Moritz brings Sonic and Fast & Furious franchise success.
- Owning the IP outright, Paramount Pictures is positioning the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brand for broader family-friendly monetization after seven feature films made it a $1 billion-plus franchise.
- Sources say the Moritz-led live-action project remains in development to revisit later, with no timing confirmed, and it will echo 1990s TMNT TV and movie versions rather than Michael Bay-produced TMNT films.

With that in mind, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the TMNT: The Last Ronin movie that was in development is seemingly dead (for now).
In 2016, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows" was the last live action film to be released around the popular tortoises. After recording only $245 million at the box office with a co-ported budget of around $135 million, it became quiet about the "Turtles". Now Paramount apparently wants to buy the franchise a completely new live action film series. At least the industry magazine "The Hollywood Reporter" reports this.
Paramount Kills 'Last Ronin' Film In Favor Of Live-Action 'TMNT' Franchise From 'Sonic The Hedgehog' Producer
Like Leonardo, Donatello, and Raphael before it, the previously announced live-action The Last Ronin movie has been sent to the grave, with Paramount instead choosing to spend their time and energy convincing Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy producer Neal H. Moritz to work his same franchise-magic on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Michelangelo takes his brothers’ mission upon himself via The Last Ronin’s Technique (Card #TBA), Magic: The Gathering …
