Teen Went to BBQ at Riverside for Her 14th Birthday - Within Hours She Had Died
An inquest opened Thursday, June 18, at Northallerton Coroner's Court into the death of 13-year-old Palwasha Akbar, who drowned in the River Wharfe at Burnsall, North Yorkshire, on May 31, one day before her 14th birthday.
Her family had gathered for a birthday barbecue at the popular riverside spot, where Akbar 'got into some difficulty' in the water during the May heatwave.
Assistant North Yorkshire Coroner Alison Norton confirmed the teenager 'was retrieved from the water and taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary, where she was later confirmed deceased,' establishing drowning as the provisional cause of death.
Campaigners now label drowning an 'epidemic' and 'national emergency,' noting that Palwasha was one of at least 19 people who died in open-water incidents during that same week of record-breaking heat.
Family members described the 13-year-old as a 'bright, kind, and caring' girl, while her school's acting principal, Lyndsay Hall, said she 'will be remembered for her compassion and willingness to go above and beyond to help others.
