17-Year-Old Missing After Going Into Water in the Rockaways

Rescue swimmers, drones and marine units searched for more than an hour, and officials said no sign of the 17-year-old was found.

  • A 17-year-old boy went missing Tuesday afternoon near Beach 73rd Street and Shore Front Parkway in Rockaway Beach, Queens, after entering the water with friends around 3:30 p.m.
  • Lifeguards do not patrol New York City beaches until Saturday, leaving swimmers in unguarded waters where, as witness Nemiah dos Santos said, "you could get hurt."
  • Teams from the FDNY, the NYPD, and the Coast Guard deployed drones, marine units, and SCUBA divers throughout the afternoon. Civilians formed a human chain in the water attempting to assist the search effort.
  • Divers ended their search around 4:50 p.m. after marine units found no sign of the missing teen. The NYPD suspended operations Tuesday night but confirmed the search will resume Wednesday morning.
  • Witnesses described chaos as helicopters circled the scene and emergency personnel searched the waters. Officials are reminding New Yorkers of the dangers associated with swimming in unguarded waters without lifeguard supervision.
