Florida Teen Dies in Electric Scooter Crash on the Way to Buy Mother’s Day Flowers
Florida Highway Patrol said the 13-year-old rider died days after the crash, which remains under traffic homicide investigation.
A 13-year-old boy identified by the Florida Highway Patrol as Colton Remsburg died Wednesday night following a Sunday collision with a pickup truck near Moss Park Road and Savannah Pines Drive in Orlando.
Remsburg was heading to buy flowers for his mother for Mother's Day when struck by the vehicle; the 35-year-old driver remained at the scene and will likely not face charges, troopers said.
Family friend Tyler Embry noted Remsburg was not wearing a helmet, stating, "It's just that he hit his head so hard on the ground." The impact split the scooter into two pieces.
Orange County School Board member Maria Salamanca called for a town hall meeting with Orlando Commissioner Tom Keen to address e-scooter safety, saying, "This is the second student in District 2 that has died because of micromobility devices."
The Florida Highway Patrol has assigned the case to traffic homicide investigators as a delayed fatality, while Lake Nona Youth Sports plans a moment of silence for Remsburg at 6 p.m. Friday at Heroes Community Park.
